Find a Penny, Pick it Up! Challenge Your Kids!
Have you ever wondered how much money is just laying around in public?
Coins on the ground in parking lots, on sidewalks, or even on the floor in the store?
My friend, Rich noticed that “Coins are so insignificant in our society today, and nobody wants to put forth the effort to bend over and pick them up.” The thought popped into his head that maybe there really is such a thing as a free lunch, and how long would it take to collect enough coins to get it?
He began picking up the coins he came across in public. Rich then challenged his daughter to do the same. They decided to save for a beverage instead of lunch as that may take a really long time.
Within six months, they each had hit their goal and shared a free drink together! Rich had found $1.68 in coins, and his daughter just over $.50.
What really stands out for me with this challenge is…
Teaching the significance and value of money, even small change.
Teaching financial anticipation and patience instead of instant gratification.
Teaching a financial life lesson through a family bonding experience.
Challenge your kids to pick up and save coins they find!
What will they save for?
A cookie?
A popsicle?
Stickers?
A lunch?
A charity?
Remember, money may not grow on trees, but you sure can find it on the ground, which leads me to believe that the best things in life just might be free!
As Ben Franklin said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
That is my two cents for the day!
If I had a nickel for every coin saying I put in this post...I could have bought my coffee today!
