Teaching kids to take initiative, think of others and make good behavioral choices are tasks we parents grind through during our parenting careers.

  • We nag

  • We make charts.

  • We punish.

  • We reward.

Parents and kids get a break from the reminders and the prodding when you can share in a funny book that teaches a great lesson!

I love how these two books magically communicate their point with humor and in such a way that all you need to do is to refer to them and the kids remember the lesson!

Here is a quick peek into each one...

The Dog Poop Initiative By Kirk Weisler

The Dog Poop Initiative
By Kirk A. Weisler

The charm of this book begins with the cover. The title alone guarantees everyone will be listening! The book tells a story of how dog poop is left behind at a kids soccer field on game day. Now, that stinks! (I couldn't resist!)

As teams come and go, people...

  • point out the poop

  • discuss the poop

  • avoid the poop

It interferes with soccer games until somebody takes the initiative to just pick up the poop!

It is a great story for kids, teenagers, and adults.

Everyone sheepishly smiles after the story because we all need a reminder to just "pick up the poop" in life and move on! See what needs to be done in life and just dive in and do it!

If Everybody Did It By Jo Ann Stover

Nag, nag, nag. Whenever I found myself nagging as a teacher, I would reach for this book! The kids LOVED this book.

The art makes light of how one person making a little mess or squeezing the cat too much becomes an over the top problem when everybody does it.

Fold the book in half when reading it, so the kids can not see what happens when everybody does it. It builds suspense, and the kids love it even more.

After reading it and laughing with my students, I would ask what are some things that everybody needs to work on in the classroom?

They all raised their hands...

If Everybody Did
By Jo Ann Stover
  • Not hanging up our coats!

  • Leaving trash on the floor!

  • Talking in line!

The book helped them to see the problem and fix it, and it cut down my nagging... a lot!

As a parent at home, what if everyone in the family...

  • left dishes in the sink,

  • legos on the floor,

  • or laundry in the washer?

Your family will get the idea too!

While this book is written for younger kids, if you use it when they are young, you can always refer back to it once they are teenagers! They will remember!

If Everybody Did, The Dog Poop Initiative...

...we would have cleaner soccer fields,  and maybe even world peace!

Cheers to a good laugh with your family, and maybe even a little less nagging!
