How to Create Your Unique Family Discipline Plan
What are the traits and qualities of your discipline DNA?
As parents we devise the lessons, rules and routines in order to develop the character and independent skills of our children as they grow into adults.
We implement the discipline.
The kids practice the discipline.
Repeat as needed.
Thinking ahead and planning can go a long way to creating a strong Discipline DNA or CODE for your family…
Expectations
What is your “expectations temperature” as a parent? Or rather, how much anarchy and chaos are you willing to tolerate from your kids?
What are your expectations…
for yourselves as parents? How will you…
model behavior for your kids to look up to?
manage parental responsibilities?
make difficult decisions?
interact with others?
fix or apologize for mistakes?
Remember that your kids are always observing!
for your kids? Will the expectations be…
developmentally realistic?
the same for all?
Be on the Same Page!
Parents, create a plan together…
Chances are that you were raised with different rules and expectations than your parenting partner was.
Discuss, negotiate, create and write your discipline plan together.
Anticipate the next age and stage for your kids.
Think ahead about what the rules, expectations, consequences and rewards will be.
Be Specific!
Write them down!
Share the plan with kids as they get older, so they understand and can maybe contribute some ideas!
Consistency! Consistency! Consistency!
Follow through!
Keep up your stamina!
Be mentally prepared for the worst case scenario. This way you are ready for a long haul, but if it’s easier than expected…woohoo!
Don’t let the kids wear you down!
Hang in there!!
Take some deep breaths
Keep your sense of humor
Use your best “Bueller…Bueller…Bueller” monotone voice to repeat yourself for the millionth time…
Mentor! Coach! Parent! Repeat!
You are teaching your kids to…
work with other people
be a responsible citizens
be kind
…and as any mentor, teacher or coach will tell you, it may take…
patience
persistence
and sometimes pure grit on your part to get the job done!
Talk about why rules, behavior and choices are important!
Kids will ask why...
…they have to do something.
…they aren’t allowed to something.
…they can’t have (insert item)
the list goes on, just be ready for “whhhhyyyyy????”
Strategies for mentoring, coaching and parenting…
Use books, media, TV shows and movies to help kids see…
how behavior affects others and themselves
