Think outside of the box this year!

Pick a few family resolutions, and take your parenting goal-setting to the next level.

Here are a few unique ideas to consider…

  1. Have each family member write their favorite quote or words of wisdom. or draw a picture on an index card. Add each to a family photo collage frame and add a section with your family name and the title Words of Wisdom for display in your home.

  2. Select a mentor for the year. A wise person you can read about and quote from to build character in the family. Types of people to consider…

    • Historical leaders like Abe Lincoln or Martin Luther King Jr.

    • Hero’s, real or fictional

    • Religious or cultural people

  3. Try having a literary lesson of the month. Read a favorite story each month and find ways to put the lessons into practice. Here are a few examples…

  4. Help kids learn life skills by choosing a different life skill to learn and work on each season. Winter could be cooking. Spring, planting, and yard work. Summer could be about healthy habits. Fall could be money and budgeting. There are many skills that kids need to learn, and picking one each season makes it easier to stay focused.

  5. Select one night a week to be screen-free. Play games or read books. Go for walks, or sit around a patio fire talking!

  6. Let the kids pick and plan a few outings or excursions throughout the year. How much will it cost? How long will it take to get there? Do you need reservations?

  7. Do a family reading challenge. You can base it on how many books to read or set an amount of time. Have a prize for the person who reads the most.

  8. Start a Sunday Dinner tradition.

  9. Post the saying “Less is more” and see how your family can work to reduce clutter in your home or purge extra toys or clothes. Consider planning a family garage sale or picking a few days throughout the year to clear the clutter.

  10. Set a physical challenge for the family. Sign up for a charity race or bike ride. Set a date to complete a backpacking trip or a day hike. Take lessons to learn a new sport like golf, pickleball, or kayaking.

    Cheers to your New Year!
