Tough Talks With Kids: Starting Points for Parents
Why should parents prepare for tough talks with their kids? For the same reasons, you prepare for a big speech at work…
Confidence in sharing difficult information.
Ensure all points are covered.
Avoid going off-topic and get to the point.
Better prepared for questions that may arise.
Incorporate your values and wisdom.
We all dread talking with our kids about embarrassing or tough topics, but it is our job to prepare them to understand the world around them, including things that are hard to discuss.
Use these tips to get started. You and your kids will thank you later!
How to create notes and prepare for tough talks with kids!
Make a list of topics you want to sit down and share with your kids. A brainstormed list!
Research the topic. Look up definitions that may help you find the words you need as you explain. Gather resources that you may want to refer to or use as you write notes for your talk.
List the points you want to make so nothing falls through the cracks.
Do you need to divide the talk into age-appropriate increments? For example, you may choose to talk with kids about their changing bodies, then as they mature a bit more, talk about sex and your family values around that, and maybe a separate talk on dating.
Plan for the talk. Put it on the calendar. Find a private place to talk where you will not be interrupted.
Follow through. Keep notes during the talk. Did your child ask a question that you need to follow up on? Do you need to schedule another time to talk?
Save your notes and resources for when you need to talk with younger siblings.
