The struggle to get kids to do chores is real. There are many challenges involved—teaching children how to do each task, reminding them to get started, and checking that the job was actually completed. But there's another factor that's often overlooked: how long kids think chores will take.

Many children believe chores will take forever, when in reality, most household tasks can be completed in just a few minutes. As parents, we may even overestimate the time ourselves. That's why it can be eye-opening to actually time each chore.

Turn Chores into a Challenge

Kids love a challenge, so why not make it a game?

Choose a day to test how long common chores really take. Make a list of your child's regular chores and have them guess how many minutes each one will take. Then grab a stopwatch—or simply use the stopwatch app on your phone or tablet—and time each chore from start to finish.

Afterward, compare their guesses with the actual times.

The results might surprise everyone!

Why It Helps

Knowing how long chores really take helps parents plan routines more effectively and gives kids a better understanding of what they're being asked to do. Suddenly, making the bed doesn't take "forever"—it might only take two or three minutes.

When kids realize a task is quicker than they imagined, they're often more willing to get started instead of putting it off.

Make It Even More Fun

Want to take the challenge to the next level? Time the same chores again a few weeks later and see if your child can beat their previous times while still doing a quality job. It becomes a fun way to build confidence, improve skills, and celebrate progress.

A little friendly competition—and a little perspective—can go a long way toward helping kids develop responsibility and making chores feel much less overwhelming.
